98 Seafood Restaurant is located in Taipan, slightly further than the police station.

But once you are on the road, it is hard to miss this brightly lit restaurant at night.

It was packed on a Saturday night, and we waited for a good 30 mins before our food arrived. And it is better to make reservation if you have a crowd.

Patin Fish @ RM53.00

The first to arrive – steamed Patin fish.

The fish was fresh and the sauce was really fragrant!

Minced meat with bean curd @ RM18.00

Fried bean curd topped with minced meat was alright compared to other dishes.

Deluxe Claypot Seafood Combo @ RM48.00

The seafood claypot was sizzling hot with mushrooms, big fresh succulent prawns and fish maws. We wiped the pot clean!

Herbal Chicken @RM28.00

Herbal chicken came with generous serving of soup. And the chicken used was kampung chicken. Though the meat was not tender to begin with but we enjoyed the soup very much.

Dessert – Fried Durian RM2.40/pc

For the dessert, we have fried durian in spring roll skin.

Innocently fried to golden brown and crisp, you will never guess what’s in it.

But, once you bite into the crispy skin, the smooth and soft durian oozes out into your mouth. It is not like durian puree, because you can taste the texture of the meat.

LOVE! It was perfect to end the satisfying meal.

The restaurant has a classic and antique feeling that makes you feel like home.

The cabinets display the old-time household items that we used to see.

Old school iron anyone?

Soon, our appetizers were served.

Bruschetta RM7.90

Sliced Baguette toasted with tomato, cheese and herb salsa, it makes a delicious bite before dinner.

Garlic Bread – RM5.90

This is my personal favorite as the fragrance of garlic complimented the crusty and crispy bread really well. Thumbs up!

Kaya Toast RM3.90

For the old school, you have a choice of homemade kaya toast. Absolutely loved the homemade kaya!

Moving on to the dinner, the main course selections are not exactly large, but it helps our mind to decide faster. We had the pleasure of sampling most of the hit items, but I shall rank the top 3 among all the dishes.

Crowd’s Top 3 Favorites:

#1 – Linguini Duck Aglio Olio RM18

Firstly, we don’t always get to see Aglio Olio with duck meat, secondly, this is really good!

Crispy duck skin and meat with linguini, (which you might think its bacon), tossed in olive oil and chili flakes, it was so savory you can’t help but keep digging in.

#2 – Classic Chicken Chop RM13

Apparently, chicken chop is the top seller since launching. True enough, the chicken was pan-fried while retaining the juice and tenderness of the meat. Then served with fries and coleslaw. Yum!

#3 – Lamb Shank RM28

If you look close enough, you will find a bulb of garlic on the plate. The lamb shank was stewed till soft and tender, you can easily put your fork to rip the meat without struggling with knife.

Homebaked Chicken & Mushroom Pie RM13

The chicken & mushroom pie comes with mashed potato and coleslaw on the side.

Chicken and carrot cubes hidden underneath the crispy top. Delicious!

Spaghetti Marinara RM15

Seafood marinara comes with a mussel and prawns. This is just alright.

Fetuccini Carbonara RM13

I have had my fair shares of carbonara, and I feel that this dish can be improved with more cream and cheese. After all, the cream will provide the kick to the dish.

Hawaiian Crispy Chicken Pizza RM17

I like the crispy skin of this pizza with the generous amount of toppings.

Mojo Pineapple Fried Rice RM13

Pineapple fried rice was just mediocre, again, it is lacking of some zing to it. If only the fried rice has more fragrance and ‘wok hei’, it would be perfect! I would love it more if it came with sambal chili.

Overall, it is still a decent dining place with reasonable price tag. If you are there, try the top 3 as of the above!

Internal affair….yes literally!

You know how sometimes you think of certain food, then you can immediately find friends for it?

It is a wonderful feeling!

Our first station to pack the food – Kedai Makanan Ah Heng @ Off Jalan Raja Laut.

It opens from 5.3opm onwards until 1am.

In the menu, there are: Black pepper pig stomach soap, pig’s trotter vinegar, braised pork ribs with bitter gourd, braised pig’s trotter with radish, braised pig’s trotter/intestines, wine chicken, curry chicken and etc.

The boss and and the pots!

Since we decided to eat in the comfort of home, we packed some dishes from this stall.

Braised pork belly and intestines.

The gravy was not overly thick and you could almost drink it! And being cooked for quite a while, the meat and intestines were soft and juicy. And the intestines had no typical smell of the intestines. YUM!

The next hit was braised pork ribs with bitter gourd.

If you are one of those who is afraid of bitterness, the bitter gourd here tasted NOT like the typical bitter gourd at all. In fact, it was just softly soaked melon and the pork ribs were lean ones.

For the pig’s stomach pepper soup, it was REALLY peppery! We almost got choked a few times after drinking it.

Dose of vegetable of the day.

Each dish from Ah Heng stall is not more than RM10.

And from another stall, we had..braised chicken legs!

Some might find it really gross but you see, they are full of collagen and all the goodness you need for your skin!

This braised chicken legs is different from others as they are not fried.

And finally, another braised pork intestines. It is really tedious if you attempt to cook this at home because you need to wash the pipes (intestines) REALLY thoroughly to get rid of the shitty smell.

Different from the first braised intestines, the gravy of this was thicker and it has more intestinal smell to it.

Great food, great companion, and great fun!

For the past rainy weeks, so many people that I know fell sick, including myself. Nothing beats a warm noodle soup on a sick day.

Tang Shifu has been in One-U, located at LG near Cold Storage, since about 3 months back and it can get really packed during the lunch and dinner time.

They have set dinner like this, which consists of a bowl of noodle soup + the side dishes. No rotation for side dishes hence they are always braised black beans and pork.

Don’t be fooled by the huge bucket though, just a normal portion. I love the ginger wine chicken noodles (RM11.90 for ala-carte), warm and homey.

The side dishes come as extra RM2 compared to the ala-carte noodles.

Another good option is scallops and sliced abalone noodles (RM12.90), I doubt it is the real abalone though. It should be the mushroom kind of abalone.

Whenever I want a light and warm dinner when I am in One-U, Tang Shifu is my choice

Drinks in the menu include the chinese herbal drinks and snow fungus kind of boiled drinks. Drinks are rather pricey compared to the main courses.

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas (Belated) and Happy New Year soon!

Since I just got a Canon S95, now I have the motivation to blog again! (If not, please remind me ^_^ )

It is very rare of me to visit the same restaurant twice in a single month, but this House of China in Kepong, I have paid them 2 visits consecutively for 2 weekends!

And I would really like to share my new find – House of China, specializing in Peking Duck!

It is not a huge restaurant, and it can get crowded on weekend dinners.

They have set menus for 4 pax, 6 pax, 8 pax and also 10 pax.

For a family of us (5), we ordered a set for 4 @RM128.00.

Bummer is, the set menu is in Chinese, could be a headache for those who can’t read. And the waitress speak Mandarin only. I was told that the chef is from China.

The set comes with half a duck which will be cooked in 2 dishes.

Of course, Peking duck is the recommended here!

This is a 1/4 of the duck. Being different from the usual Peking duck, it comes with meat too!

And the skin is not the regular thin and small one. This is about the size of a saucer.

I love the crispy skin of the duck!

And another 1/4 is being cooked with black pepper soup.

It tastes exactly like the pig stomach black pepper soup, except that this is much better, thicker, pepper-er. And the duck meat is soft too

You can be rest assured that your 1/2 is definitely served to you, and you won’t secretly wonder if the meat has been taxed or not.

Together with the set, it includes 4 pcs of xiao long bao too!

To my surprise, xiao long bao here is delicious! The soup is tastier and not quite the same like the rest.

Yummy!

Another unique dish is this – Squirrel fish.

It is actually fish cut and fried into the the shape of a cute squirrel.

As luck would have it, I had this fern dish again! How lucky!

It’s my 4th time having it in a single month.

There are also 2 servings of Tong Po meat in the set.

However, I think the meat is a bit tough and too oily.

Oh yeah, one thing to note: If you are no fan of oil, you can request them to use less oil in the cooking.

The dining hall also has antique looking deco.

Dessert to recommend:

My last visit there, we ordered this dessert in the picture. It was chilled and soft, and there were cubes of honeydew in the fillings. Love it!

So, if you are ever there, try this!

There are a also other ala-cartes that we have ordered last round but not this round.

Overall, it is quite a decent restaurant with reasonable price tag, and some unique and really Chinese cuisines.

Best of all, they will not rest on Chinese New Year too (including eve, day 1..etc)

Don’t be scared to enter this restaurant because they have some sort of altar right at the entrance, but it does not look like any deity.

Ding Tai Fung in The Gardens has just been renovated. The whole place looks brighter now and can accommodate more patrons so if you see a Q, rest assure that you usually don’t have to wait longer than 20 mins.

There is now a private function room for 10 pax. You can now celebrate special occasions in this room. Make sure you book in advanced first If you are a regular, you will now see new wallpaper too

Appetizers are one of the must-orders items. I especially love the House Special Appetizer (bottom right corner), it tastes like sze-chuan style vegetables.

The new addition to the appetizers family – Golden Pumpkin with Salted Egg @RM3.80.

Love the soft bite, but crunchy on the outside! Deep fried with salted egg..ahh heavenly!

We have also tried this Drunken Chicken, soaked with wine and served chilled, it makes a perfect starter.

And oh, it is boneless whole thigh too!

Introducing – Truffle Xiao Long Bao RM12/2 p cs!!!

Can you see the dark glow shining from the almost-translucent skin?

BLISS!

Biting into the skin, it was bursting with warm and flavor. There was this indescribable bliss and joy of eating truffle in a xiao long bao.

I really don’t mind if someone wants to treat me a dozen or more.

Next in line was Baby Xiao Long Bao RM13.80/12 pcs.

Sadly, it is only offered in Ding Tai Fung Pavilion, 2pm-6pm on weekdays, and 11am – 1pm on the weekends.

Now you know when to go!

The way to eat the babies are serving with the bowl of chicken soup along with it.

On top of the soup, there is shredded egg. Love it!

You might also notice that the folds of the baby xiao long bao are at the back instead of front.

Mini Sesame Buns RM5.50/3pcs.

I am no fan of sesame, but I think this is alright for me because it is not overwhelmingly sweet like those black sesame chowder.

They make a good dessert to end the meal.

Yam Paste Xiao Long Bao – RM7.50/6 pcs.

The trick to eat this is – leave it cold for a little for the taste of yam to be more apparent when you eat. Now, can it get more interesting?

Hurry to get your fix on xiao long bao in Ding Tai Fung now!

For the outlet in the Gardens, it is located at LG, opposite Cold Storage.

On days when I am feeling hardworking and inspired, I cook! And right now, I am having some post 1/4-life crisis, so I took 2 days off to recompose myself. Unfortunately, still not so feeling recomposed.

Crisis aside, after so long, I felt inspired again after reading this recipe on eatingpleasure.blogspot.com. I tell you, she is great at inspiring people!

My version of: Award-Winning Sweet & Sour Meat Balls.

Why award winning you may ask? It’s my first time cooking this, so I definitely deserve a medal as self-award right?

The presentation is not lip-smackingly good because I was starving!

Ok, to create this dish:

You need about 200g of minced meat for 2 pax, it can be pork, beef or chicken.

I bought a ready-packed mince meat from Tesco at about RM4.80.

For more springy and sweetness, I added prawn meat. For cruch, minced about 3 shallots depending on the size, and some corn flour. I used wheat flour here because I ran out of it.

For marination, I added about 2 spoons of red wine, sesame oil, light soy sauce, and pepper, and a little pinch of salt.

The best part about DIY is, you can almost add anything you like! You can even have minced carrot or sengkuang in your meatballs. Leave it alone for about 20-30 mins.

After that, I rolled the minced meat into balls of 8.

It is advisable not to make a TOO big ball because it will be hard to pan-fry it.

Now, heat up some oil in the pan and place the meatballs slowly onto the pan with your hand so the shapes maintained.

Use only medium heat.

And, step back! The oil may be sparkling all over out of the pan and you definitely will not want to be scalded.

But, remember to turn the meatballs from time to time to make sure that they are not burnt.

Keep turning it until they turn golden brown. To make that they are cooked thoroughly, use a chopstick to poke, if you can poke through without having meat stuck to your chopstick, they are done!

Take them out for a rest on a kitchen towel to absorb the oil.

Now, move on to the soul of the dish – tomato sauce.

For the sauce:

- Chopped garlic & one big red onion
- Diced tomato marinated in fruit vinegar
- About 6 packets of Ketchup and 1 packet of Chili sauce
- 1 spoon of sugar.

Sauteed the onion first till golden brown, add in garlic and continue for about 30 secs. Add in the diced tomato without the vinegar, and smash it with your ladder. Now, when you get a tomato pulp, add it the tomato, chili and sugar mixture. Heat and stir it for a bout 2 mins, add water if you must, until you see bubbles. Then, turn off the fire.

Place the meatball on your rice and pour the sauce covering them.

It is time to serve the dish! I DIY some sliced potato to go with the tomato sauce.

For the cost, it cost about less than RM10 for 2 pax, including all the ingredients, rice, oil and etc.

Absolutely delish!

Believe it or not, ever since I started new job, I spent more meals at home now simply because I have no energy to go out at night anymore after a long day of work.

And, and also, I started to learn different recipes. Here is a dish that I personally like, and it is quite easy to make.

You need few slabs of pork belly, about 3 slabs for 5 or 6 pax.

Clean the pork belly, and marinate with 5-spice powder (五香粉), pepper, salt, and dark soy sauce.

Leave it aside for about 20 mins for the spices to sink into the pork belly.

On the other hand, you will need some cinnamon, star anise ( ba jiao), peeled garlic and lightly smashed, and the spice that looks like nails is known as 丁香 (ding xiang).

Anyone knows what is 丁香 in Chinese?

Now, heat up a wok of oil and dump the pork belly into the hot oil.

Caution! Stand further away to avoid the splashing of the oil.

Fry the pork belly until golden brown and you know it is done!

No no, this is not ready to be eaten yet. We need to stew it now.

Every year around this time, we will see many restaurants and shops launching their mooncake, and as the year goes by, the fancy designs never fail to surprise me.

Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur too has a range of interesting mooncake, and the boxes too!

Thanks to feedmelah.com, I had the chance to step my foot in Golden Phoenix Chinese Restaurant – Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur.

You see what I mean? Velvet mooncake box, I love the color combination and design! It is a twist of fashion and tradition.

I couldn’t stop caressing the velvety box.

And and, there is also a design which somewhat resemblances the Dim Sum basket. Love the luxurious feeling.

The variety of mooncakes is no joke , they have: German Black Forest @RM18.90, Pumpkin Taro @RM18.90, Charcoal-Bake Yam @RM18.90, Bamboo Hazelnut @RM18.90, Expresso Chestnut @RM18.90, Red Yeast Sweet Potato @RM17.90, and of course the traditional ones.

The traditional double-yolk moon cake.

The booth setup outside the restaurant for mooncakes. They too have low sugar ones, for the health concerned.

Appetizer: Ginseng Chicken Soup

After all the mooncakes sampling, it’s time to wash down the sweetness with the appetizer. True to the description, I went to the heaven after taking my first sip of the soup. I swear it is the best Ginseng Chicken Soup I have ever had! While the ginseng is very strong, it is not overwhelming to the point that it is bitter, and the sweetness from chicken just made it perfect.

Fook Lou Chou Fan (Special style of Fried Rice)

One of their specialties is this Rich Men Fried Rice. Every grain is coated with egg white (lower cholesterol) and fried with egg. On top of the rice, it is the scallop floss. However, I feel that this is a little dry, if only they used more oil…but that would totally defeat the purpose of health element in this dish.

Scallop and Mango

We were awe-struck by this dish when it was served..because you see the size of the scallop?

Accompanied by cooked mango, it is a very interesting combination.

The scallop is so huge that I would not say it is sweet, but the mango perfected the lack of sweetness of the scallop.

Next up, we had La Mien Si fu to demonstrate his La Mien making skill.

It seemed pretty easy. Just drag and twist, and there you go!

To our surprise, there was a La Mien Making Competition too!

And you know what? I think I have some hidden talent of making La Mien.

I even got #1! And the prize to me was a box of mooncakes. Yessssss..I now have a velvety box as my storage too <3

Special eggplant La Mian

La Mian specially prepared by the sifu is indeed special. Springy and flavorful La Mien accompanied by the generous portion of minced meat and egg plant, it was a delight.

Fried Beancurd Skin with Prawns

Juicy prawns wrapped by crispy beancurd skin, what’s there not to like about?

My favorite dessert of the day – Guai Leng Kou with Coconut

Boiled with rock sugar for hours, the coconut drink is the best drink to soothe sore throat on a hot day.

*Drumroll*

Durian puff! The durian skin is velvety smooth and soft, and the durian just melts in your mouth. Yummy!

The geniuses behind the wok.

Now, give your loved ones a treat at Golden Phoenix Chinese Restaurant, or lug a box of luxurious mooncakes for the festive.

Being a Malaysian is great! Great in the sense that, we have so much food and reasons to celebrate all year long.

Since Ramadan is just around the corner, and it definitely means more chances for feasting.

This year, Sime Darby Convention Centre too offers Ramadan Buffet, and best of all, they have a special take-away service. (3pm – 6.30pm daily) It means, you can buy all the buka puasa food from there, and take away! Best part is – It is the price of the regular Ramadan Bazaar, but much cleaner than the street stalls.

Stalls are setup to make you feel like dining in a real bazaar.

A variety of food can be found at SDCC: Ikan bakar, satay, chicken rice, fish curry and etc.

I especially love the chicken satay! It is soft, and has a slight crispy and burnt smell. And ikan bakar is my favorite too. ^_^

And and, they have a stall for fried ice cream too! Just choose your flavor and they will fry on the spot for you. Do note that you need to savor this as soon as it is served. I took the ice cream, wandered for a while, and it melted

Other than the buffet spread, you can go for the Ramadan Set at China Treasures ranging from RM398++/6 pax to RM568++/10 pax.

RM568++/10 pax menu consists of:

Ramadan Yee Sang

Now, Yee Sang for Ramadan is interesting right? Added with dates as a twist, it tasted refreshing!

Puree of Winter Melon with Seafood

The seafood soup is really sweet as it is enriched with puree of winter melon, light and refreshing to warm your tummy.

Shallow Fried Crispy Chicken

Many might frown when they see roasted chicken in the menu of a restaurant; but I love the juiciness of the chicken and the crispy skin! Even the chicken breast is not dry.

Braised Prawns with Chef’s Homemade Sauce

As you can see, the prawns are huge and coated with salted egg yolk. No doubt, every Chinese will praise this dish. The prawns are really succulent and fresh! *Thumbs up*

Steamed Patin Shanghai Style

Patin fish is always to be served as steamed fish, in fact, I think i have not eaten Patin cooked in any other way.

The plus point of this dish is the ginger drizzled on top of the fish. Some might not like ginger but it added a zing to the steamed fish.

Good news is, for every Ramadan Set Dinner purchased, you are entitled to buy a box of mooncake for just RM10! You get the choose the variety and it comes with the beautiful wooden carrier box. Sweet?

Even if you don’t intend to get the set dinner, each mooncake only retails at RM12.50. For that quality, I would say is darn worth it!
