Lui-char is a Hakka delicacy, and I was surprised to know that there are people who have not heard of what is lui-char.
Anyway, during the 7th day of CNY, my mom prepared lui-char because she said we must eat 7 vegetables on that day.
7 dishes:
1. stir fried long beans
2. stir fried spring onions + coriander
3. stir fried tofu
4. stir fried choy-pok
5 & 6 7. stir fried i don’t-kn0w-the-vege-name
It was a lot of cutting/preparation work. And my mom would scream at me for being slow and not able to cut the vege finely. They are always end up big-chunks under my knife.
Tea-paste is the essence of this lui-char. You have to blend tea leaves + peanuts + water + salt to get this paste. Although the color is not so pleasing but the taste is awesome!
Ingredients for the tea-paste:
1. tea leaves (must not be too much, if not will be bitter)
2. stir-fried groundnuts
3. coriander leave
4. peppermint leave
However, i am not sure about the exact amount as my mom said she usually prepares it by instinct. So, it is trial and error i guess?
This is how we should eat this lui-char. Mix your favorite vege in your bowl, then mix paste in hot water then pour into your rice. Lovely!
BUT if you get insomnia because of tea…then this is a bad bad choice for dinner, because…i ended up sleeping at 4am because of this!!!
What’s your traditional must-have dishes?

I like mine dry.
OOh I love lui char! I know its a lot of work though but I’d love to try this – do you have the exact recipe for the paste or can it be bought somewhere?
luichar paste got peanut one meh..
i tot luichar soup i eat outside is mostly green color.. but ur one brown color from the peanut i guess…
They have some nuts in it one, not necessary peanuts.
I dun really like. too greenish
Not many are aware and appreciate this dish. I dont quite like this dish too but not bad and it is very healthy too. I first tried about 2 years ago at a stall in Kepong prepared by an old lady but the sauce are a little different from you mum, hers is green in colour.
You must learn your mum’s skills. So to carry on.:)
Argh!! so many greenies~~

the tea paste reminds me of pudina paste – except this is brown
Can we replace tea with something else? I also have insomnia trouble…
Jason: my mom likes it dry too!
Pink P: will ask my mom and then post up the recipes later!
Calvin: yeah brown is the peanut, it tastes better with peanut
Harmony: we used peanuts only
molly: yeah most places i go is green too
Trin: HEHEHEHE talk about the generation gap…oh well
Jian: Oh kitty only likes fish
Weilian: its nice!!
Yani: Pudina….hahahahah
KS: err no u cant replace it with something else, otherwise it would not be lui-CHAR then. take it during lunch so no insomnia!
my all time favorite…but i dislike adding rice. Originally lui char is just soup with other ingredient, no rice!

Definitely never heard of lui char. Would like to try it if I have the chance. Reminds me of kurma. Haha
Bak kut teh also no teh, so ‘lui char’ no ‘char’ is OK mah…
This is a very healthy dish! Good to detoxify after all those ‘sinful’ food during CNY! : )
